Verification is, obviously, a pain in the rear but today my brokerage firm emailed me that there was a problem with my account. So, I called them back and they wanted to me to send them a copy of my birth certificate. I answered no. They said my IRA and brokerage account had two separate names on them with the latter being the culprit as it was my first name repeated. I needed to send them a birth certificate for security reasons. I said no but they repeated what they needed it for security. I said I wasn't driving 2 hours to get a copy of my birth certificate. I offered to send them all the accumulated scanned docs from verification at casinos. This time they said no. I pointed out that this was obviously a simple error ( and under my brief calling it much worse) and the answer was really no. I told them to pay me for my time for doing this. Finally, the woman relented and said she would take care of it.
I can appreciate the need for security but this one was just silly. A birth certificate would be one of the easier docs to fabricate if I wasn't really who I said I was. Plus, it was just so obvious a silly error. The pita we go through to enjoy online gaming and various other transactions online make me support harsh penalties for hackers and fraudsters. It should be hard time in a chain gang in a hot sun with 100% humidity someplace far away from anything breaking rocks for 10 years. Maybe the feds should go after these people instead of the war on drugs and people who provide other consensual entertainment services? Somebody once hacked my computer and tried to wire a substantial amount of money out of the account. I called the FBI but they said they only investigate amount of 100k or higher. So, if you aren't rich you're shit out of luck. Fortunately for me, they didn't get away with it.
