Lottery winner gives winnings to mom
9 May 2008
SEATTLE, Washington -- As reported by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: "Michael McManus has known for years what he'd do if he ever won the lottery.
"...So when he scratched the $1 million Washington State Lottery ticket at the Mercer Mini Mart, he knew he wouldn't buy a house, quit his job or even take a vacation. The $750,000 he gets after withholding for taxes will mostly go to his mother.
"'When she had her stroke, the family made a commitment to each other. She's never going to a nursing home. We would do whatever we had to do,' McManus said from the Queen Anne store this afternoon. 'This is a gift from God to the family, to me, that will allow me to complete the most important role in my life right now -- taking care of my mother until she dies.'
"...McManus' mother, whom he and his three brothers call 'Honey,' is 84 years old..."
