John Tierney voted against the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act back in 2006 because he felt that the law was an unnecessary evil. Now, Tierney is defending his right to vote on legislation that has been proposed to overturn the UIGEA.

Last week, Tierney was at the center of controversy when it was learned that his wife had been indicted on charges relating to an online gambling operation that Tierney's brother-in-law was running. Tierney claims to have had no knowledge of the operation, and defended his right to vote on future gambling legislation.

"The issue as I understand it on voting on a bill is whether or not you have any monetary interest in it," said Tierney. "I had nothing to do with his (Robert Eremian). If he made a zillion dollars out of robbing banks, should I never vote on a bank bill?"

The issue could become contentious with the Frank bill expected to move forward sometime in the coming months. Even if the bill is stalled until after the new year, there is a chance that Tierney's wife's involvement with the online gaming operation that was targeted by the Justice Department could become a major issue.
