Hello ladies! I've gotten a few PM's, and some questions about computer help.

I'm MissVikki, I'm CALizz's daughter. You can just call me Vikki or "that brat". But I am helpful! Some of you have had questions concerning different computer aspects, and as a Computer Science major, I would love to help!

The main thing I'm getting is "How do I defrag my computer?" well for starters, to put it simply, when you install, and uninstall programs, little bits of pieces get left behind. Kind of like the dirt on your kitchen floor. And if you let these bits pile up long enough, your computer is going to be slow, acting funky, and you're going to wonder why you spent hundreds of dollars for a computer that can't even open Internet Explorer.

So! Moving on; there are two ways to go about defragging your computer (personal preference). I will go over the easy one first;

Option A: Click Start, All Programs, go to the Accessories Menu, from there go to the System Tools folder, and you'll see a little button for [Disk Defragmenter]. Click this, the defragment program will open up, and you'll see two bars. The bar on top is BEFORE the defrag, the bar on the bottom is the bar AFTER the defrag. You have the option through a button to [Analyze] which analyzes your computer, and will tell you whether you need to defragment or not. If you've never done it, go directly to [Defragment]. NOTE: You must have your screen saver disabled during this event. To disable the screensaver, right click anywhere on your desktop (just not on an icon), a menu will pop up, click "Properties", go to the Screen Saver tab, and select "NONE" for your screen saver (remember to re-enable your screen saver after the defrag). This defrag once it starts can take several hours, so my recomendation is that you start your defrag before you go to sleep. Start it up, hop in bed, and by the time you wake up, it SHOULD be done. And voila! You'll notice instant results in the speed of your computer.

Now Option B leads you to the same program, but just through a different route: Open My Computer, right click C: Drive, select properties and go to the tools tab, you will see multiple options, under defragmentation, click defragment now.

Also, one more note, a GREAT way to clear up some extra space on your hard drive and help your computer run faster is to use the "Disk Cleanup". All you have to do is go to the Start Menu, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and you'll see [Disk Cleanup]. Just click this, it will scan your computer, and then check all the boxes to remove any unwanted junk (don't worry, it won't delete your programs, it's just getting rid of leftover pieces of programs that you've already deleted). I recommend using Disk Cleanup before a Defrag. You will have better results.

And that concludes todays basic keep your computer running smoothly lesson, thank you for reading my long rant, and I hope it helps some of you.

If you have ANY other computer questions (IE - "Where do I get a GOOD FREE Anti Virus" "What really is Spywear anyways, and how do I get rid of it?") Feel free to post, or PM me. I'd prefer you post, because other people may have the same question as you, and if I don't have to type the same thing twice, I'd prefer it :)

:beers

No problem! And it's a pleasure to help out a fellow Australian! (I myself was born in Brisbane. Just spent Dec-Jan of this year in Aus and it was GREAT, can't wait to go back!)

Liz - Defrag CLEANS your computer. FORMAT removes EVERYTHING from a hard drive. There is a HUGE difference. Please don't scare the ladies. Defrag good. Format bad.

Liz - You received your computer from Dell. It SHOULD be in the box along with the instruction manual. Dell computers come pre-installed with Windows and they usually include the CD in the box (in case you DO want to format and start from scratch). If you cannot find the CD, call Dell, and get a replacement.

Carey - I appreciate the kind comments! :friendsReally though, computers are my passion, so it's more of a pleasure for me! My father taught me computers from the time I was 6 or 7 years old (back in the day of 386 computers, years before Pentium 1 even came out!) so I've been using them for quite some time.

And besides, when I pass on computer advice or knowledge, it refreshes my own memory as well. It always helps to brush up on old skills. :)

Wow, awfully nice of you to offer help Vikki! :hug

Awfully nice of you guys to welcome me in like you did. :friends

I'll do anything, I'll be your computer magician! streakrockssss

NOTE: Liz brought to me through PM an error which occured when she tried to defrag requiring a CHKDSK first. Don't fret if you get this, I'm running late for class, but when I get back, I'll post about how to run a CHKDSK (Check Disk) if this happens.

NOTE NOTE: I've noticed a good 75% of the downloadable casino's have Spyware, or some sort of Malware in them. This is most likely the cause her computer wants her to Check her Hard Disk (Or Hard Drive, to make sure it's still okay).

Okay, as Liz mentioned earlier, her computer said she needed to run a CHKDSK (Check Disk) before continuing.

I will let everyone know how to remedy this situation:

What you need to do, is from your computer; Click Start, if you're running Windows XP/NT/2000/95/98, to the LEFT of the programs menu will be a little button called "RUN...". Click Run, and a little window will open saying "Type the name of a program, folder, document, or Internet resource, and Windows will open it for you." There will also be a field for you to type in (some times it's blank, sometimes it will have something like msconfig or another program, if you've used run before); clear the field if there's anything in there and type "chkdsk" exactly like that (no quotes obviously) and hit ok, or enter. A little black window will open up like this:

You do not have to do ANYTHING. Just let the program run. It may be quick, it may take a little bit of time, do not close the window, let the program run. When the program is finished, it will close automatically, and you should be able to defrag your computer.

The big question: What does CHKDSK do? Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors. Disk errors are a common source of difficult-to-track problems, and Chkdsk should be one of the first tools you use when troubleshooting problems that do not appear to be the result of a recent system change.

You may see something like this:

Don't fret, as I said, it's just getting rid of the corrupt or damaged files. Hope this helps!

Thanks Vic!!

Problem solved. I'll do the defrag in a bit.

Life's strange, but just a few weeks ago I posted a question about free anti-virus software. I got soo many replies, suggestions etc.

This really is a fantastic forum and if it weren't for the members it couldn't happen. Not to down play what the owners, admins. and mods. do!! We couldn't have one without the other!!!

So, thanks for giving us a fun comfortable place to come online!! ;)

Love and Light,
Liz

No problem, I'm exhausted right now, but either later tonight (if I don't pass out) or tomorrow when I wake up, I'll post my top 3 FREE virus and anti-spyware programs. I've tested them all, I know that they work extremely well, and I know that they're free (which is the best part!).

Whereabouts did you visit when you were over last - Brissie? I lived on the Gold Coast for a few years when I was growing up and I love it up there.

Hey Sorcer!

I had Vic at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane. I've been to the Gold Coast a few times, yrs. ago. One of my favorite places was Noosa Heads. My spelling may be wrong but Perrigion beach, near Noosa is one of THE MOST beautiful beaches I've ever been!!

I've been to spots in Mexico and most of the Islands of Hawaii, but they have nothing on Perrigion. I've NEVER seen soo many stars in my life!!!

(Sorry for jumping in).... Wasn't trying to throw you or hijack your helpful thread Ms. Vic!

Love you!

(Not to hijack my OWN thread, doh, wish there was a way to move all the computer related stuff up to the top, oh well!)

Well, I landed in Cairns. My dad's brother and his wife live up there. From Cairns, we went to Sydney, where my grandmother lives, from Sydney to Brisbane, to visit some of my dad's friends from the RAAF, from Brisbane to Perth to visit another dozen relatives, then back to Sydney to spend the last few days with my grandmother.

To be honest, Brisbane was my FAVORITE! We went to this amazing pub, the bartender was a Kiwi, and was such a sweetie. I didn't have to pay for a single drink (in America, bartenders live off of tips, in Australia I learned, bartenders don't really make much in tips), but for his generosity, I was giving him the cost of each of my drink in tip money. He said to come back the next day and everything would be on the house, unfortunately, we had to drive (yes drive) back to Sydney. Brisbane and Sydney were great. Cairns was too humid, and Perth was WAY too hot. (I landed Christmas day, and left January 20th, so you can guess the weather).

I can't wait to go back! :beers

On another computer related note: Ladies - In general, a lot of these unknown online casinos are very bad for your computers (not to mention your wallets). They install backdoors, malware, spyware, viruses, and the such. This is why I started this thread. Through much trial and research and years of aggrivation myself, I give to you...my top 3 list! Well, top 6 in total, but top 3 FREE Anti Virus, and top 3 FREE Anti Spyware!

I will first go over the Top 3 Anti Virus. Then the top 3 Anti Spyware. I will post the name, their main webpage (if you'd like to look) and then the download link (in case you'd just like to get to the good stuff).

TOP THREE FREE ANTI VIRUS

1.Anti-Vir - http://www.free-av.com/
Download Link: http://www.free-av.com/en/trialpay_download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html (Click the Green Download Now Button)
2.AVG - http://free.avg.com/
Download Link: http://free.avg.com/download?prd=afe (Click Download FREE Edition)
3.Avast - http://avast.com/
Download Link: http://avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (Follow the register directions, then download)

TOP THREE FREE ANTI SPYWARE

1.Spy-Bot - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Download Link: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html (Click any of the download here mirrors, if one doesn't work, choose another)
2.Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoft.com/index.php
Download Link: http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php (Click the download button)
3.Microsoft Windows Defender -http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
Download Link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en&mg_id=10134

NOTE: The only reason I put Microsoft Windows Defender last is because you should immediately install this. It is constantly running, it updates itself, and you don't have to worry about it. So get it ASAP. The others, AdAware, and SpyBot are for YOU to clean out your own computer on your own time.

In case you are wondering, what I use for my anti virus is Anti-Vir. It has never steered me wrong, and I have not had any problems with my computer (knock on wood) since I built it. I have Microsoft Windows Defender running constantly, and I use SpyBot personally. But if I feel that I KNOW there is something wrong, I start up AdAware to see if it can find anything that the other program couldn't find.

Personally, I don't use Norton, because 1: It's expensive and 2: If you decide to uninstall it, it completely messes up your machine (I've had it happen twice, don't buy into it)

If you have any questions, let me know!

Happy computing and gambling ladies!
