Last month Barton said he was finalising a bill drafted in consultation with lobby group the Poker Players Alliance, and that he would look to introduce this under the jurisdiction of the United States Energy and Commerce Committee, of which he is chairman emeritus. Both California Republican John Campbell, who introduced his own federal bill in March with Democrat Frank as co-sponsor, have pledged support for Barton’s bill. Other co-sponsors include Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.), and Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) with more names expected. According to US political blog The Hill, Barton's bill would require poker sites to register through the gaming commissions of states that currently permit gambling and create a federal body to oversee the industry. Earlier this week Democrat Congressman Jim McDermott introduced a further bill to tax internet gambling, also with the backing of John Campbell and Barney Frank. This is also expected to act as a companion to the federal bill introduced by Campbell (and co-sponsored by Frank) in March.
