The Aqueduct casino project has been dangled in front of New York citizens for so long that this week's groundbreaking ceremony seemed almost surreal. After ten years of posturing and missed opportunities, ground was finally broken for the casino on Thursday.

Governor Robert Patterson lead the way in front of hundreds of senior citizens at Aqueduct. There were several other officials in attendance, but it was the ones that were not present that caused a stir among New Yorkers.

State Senators Eric Adams, Malcolm Smith, and John Sampson were all missing from the historic ceremony. The three senators are believed to be a big part of the group that accepted an earlier bid for the Aqueduct casino from a group of investors. The earlier approval is thought to have been done unprofessionally, and the manner in which it was conducted caused the deal to fall through.

Resorts World New York Casino will be a main draw at Aqueduct. It is being called on to revive the racing industry in New York, and it will be built in an empty wing of Aqueduct. For New York residents, the idea of a groundbreaking ceremony had many looking towards the future when the $350 million facility is complete.

"I was twenty-two years old and in high school when we first voted for the casino at Aqueduct," said Jason Biggle. "Now, I'm ten years older and have a wife and two kids. I will not be able to enjoy the casino like I would have back then, but I'll still find time to go check it out."
