The Premier for the Australian state of Tasmania has welcomed last week’s defeat of a bill that would have blocked the proposed sale of the state-owned Tote Tasmania bookmaker.
Australian Labor Party politician Lara Giddings is leading the nation’s least populated state in coalition with the Tasmanian Greens and stated that the defeat of the Sale of Tote Tasmania Repeal Bill on Wednesday will now permit her government to proceed with the deal.
“It is my firm view that it is not core business for the Tasmanian government to be operating a betting agency,” said 38-year-old Giddings.
“We will now have the flexibility to sell the Tote if the market is right and to reinvest the proceeds in much needed social and economic infrastructure.
“This is not an attempt to plug a budget shortfall as the Liberals cynically assert but, in these times of financial constraint, proceeds from a possible sale could be used to fund one-off capital initiatives in health and education.
