The Super Bowl is the most gambled on sporting event in the US year after year. In some years, over one hundred million dollars is wagered on the game, and that is at legal sports books. With less than two weeks left before the big game, gambling treatment centers and hotlines are preparing for an increase in business.
All across the US, hotlines have been set up to help problem gamblers find comfort and treatment for their addiction. In many states, these hotlines have been created because of gambling expansion, either state lotteries or new casinos. Lawmakers have used both forms of gambling to help with budget deficiencies.
In Wisconsin, the Council on Problem Gambling claims they get more calls in January, February, and March than in any other months. That makes sense considering the major sporting events that are held in those three months.
In January, the NFL playoffs are in full effect. Championship Sunday offers only two games, and gamblers load up on their bets in hopes of hitting big going into the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl has been backed up to early February, and gamblers sometimes go overboard as the season comes to a close.
