If the Atlantic City casino industry in New Jersey thought they had problems when competition grew stronger from Pennsylvania, wait until they have to start competing for customers with New York. Governor David Patterson is set to sign off on a deal for full scale casino gambling in the Catskills.

The state of New York has flirted with casino gambling in the past decade, allowing several racinos in the state. The latest deal was struck at Aqueduct, where officials had been seeking to bring video gambling machines for the past ten years.

This week, it appears that Governor Patterson is prepared to expand gambling even further. Patterson, according to The New York Times, is set to allow a full scale casino to be built in the Catskills. The casino would become the first in the state with slots and table games.

The Stockbridge-Munsee tribe that is based in Wisconsin is close to an agreement with the governor that would allow for the casino near New York City. Even if the state approves the deal, it would also have to be approved federally. When tribal casinos are proposed, the tribe must gain federal recognition for the land on which the casino will be built.
