Nothing Sweet About Hostess Closure: Workers
“We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike,” CEO says

linois' Schiller Park Hostess location is closing and about 1,400 workers there are out of a job.
Hostess Brands, the makers of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread, is going out of business after striking workers failed to heed a Thursday deadline to return to work, the company said.
The Schiller Park bakery is one of 33 being closed along with 65 distribution centers, about 5,500 delivery routes and 570 outlet stores as part of a company "wind down." Operations have been suspended at all plants.
“We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike,” Hostess CEO Gregory F. Rayburn said in announcing the firm had filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court to shutter its business. “Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”
The closure will include the sale of Hostess, Drakes and Dolly Madison as well as Wonder, Nature’s Pride, Merita, Home Pride, Butternut and Beefsteak.

Just another blow to unions and workers rights. Jobs will continue to be downgraded to min wage jobs that CEOS who are making double digits in the millions will continue to say we cant afford to treat our workers like humans by providing benefits because a little profit isnt enough anymore, it must profits in the billions, really sad state this world has been reduced to.

I go with the philosophy that some job is better than no job. Often strikers go way to far in their demands and it hurts everybody. Of course not everyone agrees with that. I have personally known several out of work people who claimed to be looking for jobs. I would mention that mcdonalds, hardees and places like that do a lot of hiring. These people would laugh at me and say quote I will never lower myself enough to work at those places. Ok so its better to sit around on your butt and let the government support you. Thats the problem.

I will dearly miss my hostess cupcakes.

I was wondering about this so I researched it and unfortunately what I suspected was true. The unions once again put people out of work. The unions can be a good thing but sometimes all they do is hurt the people who are making them rich. Of all the post I found one southern lady told it the way it is.

An Alexandria, LA employee with username Hard working Southerner posted, "I just want to thank all of you [ ] union hands. You have taken food out of my family's mouth and more than likely the roof over their head. We were working at 100% in our plant. There are no jobs in our area and we knew our best chance was to see this out. But thanks to a bunch of dam Yankees and west coast [ ] we will never get that chance now. Unbelievable that 2-3 thousand can so easily toss the future away of 18 thousand.
Most people today are grateful to be employed and many have also reduced their paycheck to avoid unemployment.
Unemployment and underemployment are directly connected to low volume purchases that push companies to close their doors.
Hostess Brands proposed selling a portion or making employees owners. The offer was solicited to the unions in the amount of $100 million representing 25 percent of the ownership. The unions did not agree to the idea.
