Should this pass, the state will join 12 others that have banned the practice.
Key points:
- Student athlete harassment from angry gamblers has prompted the state to act
- A recent report shows that 12% of angry messages received by student athletes are from angry gamblers
Lawmakers in New Jersey will consider placing a ban on props betting following recent reports
of student athlete harassment, according to an Associated Press report.
A bill to implement the restriction has already been presented to Garden State legislators. If it passes,
prop bets on college events would be prohibited.
Prop bets involve wagers on how many rebounds or points a basketball player could have or the number of touchdowns
or yards that football players might have. With prop betting, players bet on these game aspects “instead of or in conjunction
with a game’s outcome or spread.”
NCAA Director of Government Relations Austin Mayo shared with the AP that one in three athletes from heavily wagered
sports said that they have “received harassment from gamblers.”
Signify Group has published its latest report on student athlete harassment in collaboration with an NCAA
tudy conducted between November 2023 and June 2024.
The report said that 5,000 abusive messages were reported within the six-month time frame and 72,000
messages were triggered from the 1.3 billion posts examined.
Good to know: This data echoes a report released by Signify Group in October
Out of the total of abuse posts detected, 12% were related to Sports Betting and match-fixing, the report said.
One third of all detected abuse found in the study was sexual or sexist in nature. The research also showed that one in
three players received targeted abuse from angry gamblers.
The controversy surrounding prop betting is not exclusive to New Jersey. Louisiana recently issued a ban a statewide ban
from prop betting on college athletes through licensed Sportsbooks will take effect this summer.
Colorado, Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Oregon have put regulations in place to restrict prop betting.
Maryland, Ohio and Vermont have also recently banned props betting on college sports.
Other states, including Illinois, Connecticut and Iowa prohibit props betting for in-state teams.
