Groundhog Day Special at Everygame
Celebrate Groundhog Day with our special poker tournament!
Discover the unique tradition of Groundhog Day and join our special $2,000 GTD poker tournament on February 2nd.
Groundhog Day is a popular tradition in the United States and Canada. It is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow. If he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole. If the day is cloudy and, hence, shadowless, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground.
The groundhog tradition stems from similar beliefs associated with Candlemas Day and the days of early Christians in Europe. For centuries the custom was to have the clergy bless candles and distribute them to the people. Even then, it marked a milestone in winter and the weather that day was important.
The Groundhog Day ceremony held at Punxsutawney in central Pennsylvania has become the most attended, with crowds as large as 40,000 (nearly eight times the year-round population of the town).
The average attendance had been about 2,000 until the year after the movie (Groundhog Day) screened in 1993, after which it rose to about 10,000. The official Phil is said to be a supercentenarian, having been the same forecasting beast since 1887.
To celebrate this tradition, whatever the forecast, we have a special tournament running on February 2nd only.
