Bay State will be ready for online gambling

Beacon Hill lawmakers are considering expanding the Lottery to include Internet sales — already a common practice in five states — and Treasurer Steven Grossman said the Bay State will be ready as the idea gains national momentum.

“Whether I think it’s a good idea or not, it’s clear Washington is moving toward online gambling,” Grossman said. “While I oppose it, I want to make sure we are ahead of the curve and are one of the winners of the new world of online gaming and not a loser because we stuck our heads in the sand.”

State legislators are considering a bill that would require the Lottery to launch a pilot program to sell tickets online, accepting a variety of payment methods from debit and credit cards to services such as PayPal and eCheck.


The measure, sponsored by state Sen. Michael Rush (D-West Roxbury), is intended to boost revenue, possibly by as much as 25 percent, and follows states such as New York, Minnesota, Virginia, Maryland and North Dakota, which already sell some season tickets online. Neither Rush, who is currently serving in Iraq with the Navy Reserves, nor his chief of staff John Regan, testified yesterday at a hearing on the bill, which also drew no detractors. Instead, Rush’s office offered written testimony.
