* The very first Wimbledon event took place in 1877, and was populated by amateurs. The Men’s Singles was the only event-type taking place at that early stage. Spencer Gore won his way to victory from amongst 22 others, with only a couple of hundred onlookers watching the whole thing.
* Seven years later, in 1884, Men’s Doubles and Women’s Singles finally became official at Wimbledon.
* There are 20 grass courts available at the Wimbledon grounds, as well as five indoor courts for club members, five red shale courts and four clay courts.
* This year, there will be around 200 ball girls and boys traipsing around the courts.
