The government for Antigua and Barbuda has expressed disappointment at the recent indictments in America of eleven individuals associated with online poker sites FullTiltPoker.com, AbsolutePoker.com and PokerStars.com.
Having won a hard-fought dispute against the United States at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) some years ago over laws criminalising the provision of remote gambling services to US-based consumers, Antigua and Barbuda revealed that it has spent ‘considerable time and effort’ in attempting to reach a compromise that would recognise the legitimacy conferred by the decision while addressing any concerns.
However, Harold Lovell, Minister for Finance and Economy for the Caribbean nation, stated that last week’s indictments and other recent developments ‘would seem to indicate that the United States is still unwilling or unable to tackle the issue of offshore remote gaming services in a mature and legally compliant fashion’.
