MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network) -- Neighboring states are jumping on it, but you won't be placing any wagers on your favorite teams any time soon in Wisconsin.
State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says Sports Betting would require a change in the state's compact with Indian tribes that operate casinos.
"The way they were negotiated by Governor Doyle with the tribes, I don't think it's something we can simply implement in Wisconsin.

That's why there hasn't been much talk about it in our state."
Fitzgerald says he does not think current governor Tony Evers wants to re-open talks with Wisconsin's tribes. "You would have to have some kind of sign-off [by the tribes], and I have no idea whether the Governor would do in that direction."
Iowa casinos processed close to $40 million in wagers in September, the first full month of legalized sports gambling in that state. The Illinois Gaming Board is in the process of drafting Sports Betting regulations in that state, and legislation being considered by the Michigan legislature would allow it there.
