Slotland African aid project continues to help children in Malawi
27 December 2012

LONDON -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- The school that Slotland funded in Malawi is flourishing and the group behind it, boNGO Worldwide, is initiating new programs to help even more children. To help raise funds for the continuing operation of the group’s school and teacher training center, and for new projects including an HIV/AIDS awareness film, Slotland is encouraging players to consider their own donations.

Just $4 covers the cost of one child’s school expenses, including lunch for a month, and $20 pays one teacher’s monthly salary.

Slotland, home of one-of-a-kind online slots and video poker games since 1998, provided more than $100,000 in funding for the construction for boNGO’s first school building and to support its staff in the early years. Since then other sponsors have come on board and the group has gone on to develop other teacher training centers and two Model Childhood Centers.

“It’s so gratifying to see that a project we’ve been so involved in has continued to be so successful” said Slotland Manager Michael Hilary. “We’re happy to help boNGO spread the word about its work and to help them raise money to continue making such a difference to so many children in Malawi.”

boNGO stands for “based on Need-driven Grassroots Ownership” – expressing the importance of a self-help approach of the people at the grassroots level, which boNGO sees as fundamental for participatory and sustainable development.

In 2010 boNGO produced an HIV awareness film that has been seen by thousands of people. Through the story of a 17-year-old prostitute, Zione, they are learning about the importance of using condoms as protection. Work has begun on another film, B’ella, a secondary-school drama exploring friendships, love and the impact of HIV/AIDS on the people of Malawi.

Players who wish to share their good fortune by supporting an organization that has been making a real difference in Malawi can make a donation by PayPal on the group’s website: boNGO - Based on Need-driven Grassroots Ownership | Home.

That really is great, I hadn't heard about that before, thanks Judy.
